Kimberly Garcia, a double world champion in race walking, had a strong showing at the 2024 World Athletics Team Championships held in Antalya, Turkey. She claimed victory in the 20km Senior Women’s Individual event on a hot Sunday, dominating the race on the two-kilometre loop course at the Antalya Expo Centre. Along with her teammate Evelyn Inga, Garcia took the lead halfway through the race, setting them up for a potential 1-2 finish until Inga received a penalty.
Garcia’s win was an impressive comeback after a disappointing performance at the Race Walking Tour event in Dudince, where she had to withdraw after just 2km. Crossing the finish line in 1:27:12, Garcia immediately shifted her focus to the upcoming Paris 2024 Games, aiming to replicate her success on that international stage.
Defending champion Ma Zhenxia of China secured the silver medal despite Erica de Sena of Brazil claiming the bronze. Inga managed to recover and finish fourth, contributing to Peru’s second-place finish in the team standings behind China. Spain took home the team bronze, highlighting the competitive nature of the event. Garcia’s determination and skill were on full display as she set her sights on future achievements in the sport.
