Dennis Petercsak, a dedicated science teacher at Hauppauge High School, has been honored with the 2024 STEM Star Teacher Award from the Long Island STEM Education Leadership Association. For the past 15 years, he has taught a diverse range of courses including biology, IB computer science, regents physics, AP physics 1, and AP physics C: electricity and magnetism.
What sets Petercsak apart from other teachers is his innovative project-based physics course that focuses on big ideas rather than mathematical equations. This approach has made it more accessible to a wider range of students who may not have initially been interested in physics.
Aside from his teaching duties, Petercsak also serves as an adviser to the Science Olympiad Team at Hauppauge High School. Under his leadership, the team has made it to the state competition for five consecutive years. Additionally, he plays a key role in hosting the Eastern Long Island Regional Science Olympiad Competition at the school.
Dr. Robert Wankmuller, Director of Science and Research at Hauppauge High School, praised Petercsak for being “a beacon of light for his students” in a news release announcing the award. His dedication to STEM education and innovative teaching methods have earned him recognition as a STEM Star Teacher.
