The recent suspension of radio stations by the government of Burkina Faso for reporting on a report released by Human Rights Watch (HRW) regarding mass executions by the country’s Army highlights the government’s efforts to control information and manipulate the narrative surrounding human rights violations in the country. With over 20,000 people killed and more than 2 million displaced due to a security crisis that has been ongoing since 2015, Burkina Faso is facing significant challenges. The country experienced two coups d’état in 2022, further destabilizing the situation.
In an effort to address these challenges, Burkina Faso has distanced itself from its former colonial ruler, France, and sought military assistance from Russia. Additionally, the government expelled three French diplomats for alleged involvement in “subversive activities,” indicating a shift in alliances and a desire for greater autonomy from former colonial powers. The government’s actions demonstrate its willingness to take drastic measures to address the security challenges facing the country, even if it means alienating longtime allies.
