Breathing New Life: COTC Launches Respiratory Therapy Technology Program in Central Ohio

2 min read

Central Ohio Technical College (COTC) is set to introduce a new associate degree of applied science program in respiratory therapy technology. The program, which is pending accreditation confirmation, will start this autumn at the Newark campus. The application deadline for interested students is June 15, and COTC also has branch campuses in Coshocton, Mount Vernon, and Pataskala.

Respiratory therapists play a crucial role in the medical field, assisting individuals with lung diseases or disorders in their recovery and rehabilitation. They work in various settings such as emergency departments, intensive care units, and rehabilitation centers. The two-year program at COTC will combine classroom instruction with clinical placements to provide students with a well-rounded education.

Tyler Richards, the program director, explained that the need for respiratory therapists in Licking County and beyond led to the development of this program. He highlighted the fact that the number of therapists retiring is higher than those entering the workforce, resulting in a growing demand for professionals in the field. This program aims to address this gap by preparing students for careers as respiratory therapists.

Upon completion of the program, graduates will be eligible to sit for the registered respiratory therapist (RRT) credential offered by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). This credential opens up opportunities for graduates to work in the field, with an annual median wage of $65,760 according to Ohio Labor Market information. Students may also apply for a limited permit one year into the program to gain practical experience while studying.
