Mental health development and needs for children, teenagers, and young adults are the focus of this year’s Breaking the Stigma: A Dakota News Now Special Report. We had the opportunity to sit down with Rising Hope Counseling founder Jill Janecke to discuss the significance of brain development and treatment options for those in need.

Additionally, we explored a partnership between Southeastern Behavioral Health and the Sioux Falls Police Department that is aimed at improving the response to mental health-related calls for service. The cabinet secretary for the South Dakota Department of Social Services also discussed a collaboration with Lawrence & Schiller to increase awareness for mental health.

Avera Behavioral Health psychologist Dr. Wallace Jackmon joined the program to provide insight on the impact of children being exposed to cell phones and social media at a younger age, and how it can affect their social skill development. Furthermore, we interviewed a Sioux Falls woman who bravely shared her personal mental health journey, which began with a conversation with her primary care provider at Sanford Health.

If you or someone you know is in the midst of a mental health emergency, it is crucial to contact authorities or call 9-8-8. Additionally, resources can be accessed through the Helpline Center. Volunteers of America Dakotas offers mental health services and resources for families in the area. Copyright 2024 Dakota News Now. All rights reserved.
