Addressing Skills Gap in Semiconductor Chip Industry: The Importance of Engineer Training Programs in Vietnam

2 min read

Developing training programs for engineers in the semiconductor industry is of utmost importance, according to Deputy Minister of Education and Training Hoang Minh Son. He emphasized this point during a conference held on April 26, where he highlighted the need for suitable training programs that meet the quantity and quality demands of businesses.

The microchip industry will require between 30,000 to 50,000 engineers by 2030, posing both an opportunity and a challenge for universities to develop training programs that meet these needs. Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Phong Dien from Hanoi University of Science and Technology suggested that training programs should be based on the actual needs of the industry, determining which fields of semiconductor ICs the engineers will work in after completing their training.

Dr. Nguyen Duc Minh from Hanoi University of Science and Technology proposed a pilot manufacturing program that involves collaboration between universities, businesses, and government to provide scholarships, tax incentives, and resources for training programs in the semiconductor chip industry. Dr. Nguyen Minh Son from the University of Information Technology in Ho Chi Minh City highlighted the gap between the skills taught in universities and the skills needed in IC design companies. He proposed a training program focused on System-on-Chip-oriented IC design to address this discrepancy and emphasized the need for a shared laboratory model to promote research and train human resources in the semiconductor chip industry.

In summary, developing suitable training programs for engineers in the semiconductor chip industry is crucial to meeting growing demand for skilled professionals in this field and driving technological advancements and economic growth in Vietnam.
