In a surprising turn of events, Westview High School football coach Jamal Jones resigned following a bizarre incident at an Oregon football camp. According to Oregonlive.com, Jones allegedly woke up players in the early morning hours of the multi-day camp on Linfield University campus by slapping and shaking them. The school released a statement from WHS principal Matt Pedersen stating that Jones had resigned from his head coaching position immediately.
The incident at the football camp had raised concerns among the community and prompted Jones’ resignation. However, the school is now working to address the situation and move forward in a positive direction. Despite the unexpected turn of events, the goal is to rebuild trust and create a safe and successful football program for the student-athletes at Westview High School.
Jones, who had previously been the head coach at Franklin High School in Portland, Ore., and Arcata High School in California, was in his first year as the Wildcats’ head coach. He was also on leave from his job as a Hillsboro police officer. The school is committed to ensuring the safety and comfort of their players and their families while preparing for a successful season ahead.
A meeting with the assistant coaching staff was scheduled later that morning to provide more information about team gatherings, football workouts, and practices. The goal was to ensure that everyone involved felt comfortable and safe while continuing to work towards building a winning program.
