In a surprising move, Walmart has decided to shut down all 51 of its health care centers across five states and discontinue virtual care services. The company has cited a lack of sustainability in their business model after five years since the launch of Walmart Health centers.
Walmart Health centers, established in 2019 next to Walmart Supercenters, provided a range of services including labs, X-rays, primary and urgent care, dental work, and behavioral health services. The closure will impact communities in Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, and Texas where the centers are located.
In a statement, Walmart expressed the difficulty of the decision and acknowledged the impact on patients, associates, providers, and communities. The company mentioned challenges such as a tough reimbursement environment and rising operating costs as factors contributing to the decision.
Specific closure dates were not provided by Walmart but affected associates are eligible to transfer to other locations within the company. Those who do not transfer or leave the company after 90 days will receive severance benefits.
Walmart is now shifting its focus to its numerous pharmacies and vision centers. With nearly 4,600 pharmacies and over 3,000 vision centers
