Upgrading Argentina’s 2CA2 Tanks: A Collaboration with Elbit and Local Partners for Enhanced Capabilities

In 2010, Argentina began working with Elbit on upgrading its 2CA2 tanks. These tanks were produced in a joint venture between Argentina and Germany from 1979 to 1995. The collaboration with Elbit for tank upgrades started in 2010, with Argentine companies involved in the project implementation. A budget of 30 million dollars was approved for the project, which is expected to run until 2027. However, due to Argentina’s economic challenges, additional funding may be required in the 2025 and 2027 budgets to complete the project.

The tank upgrades led by Elbit and local partner IMPSA focus on improving identification systems, intentions, attack capabilities, and overall tank protection. Technologies such as the E-Laws threat detection system and COAPS-L electro-optical sensing system are being integrated into the tanks to enhance their capabilities. Additionally, Israeli-made protection from IMI is also being considered for installation on the tanks.

During a recent event attended by President Millay, Defense Minister Luis Petrie confirmed that the tanks would start arriving this year. Millay also expressed interest in increasing the number of tanks to be upgraded to 50 more.
