New research published in the journal Earth System Science suggests that Golconda diamonds, such as the Hope or Koh-i-noor, may have originated from the Wajrakarur kimberlite mine in present-day Andhra Pradesh, India. These diamonds are known for their transparency and sparkle due to their low impurities and nitrogen levels. The Wajrakarur kimberlite mine is located about 300 km from where these diamonds were mined, and geologists studied the chemistry of surrounding kimberlite and lamproite rocks to make this discovery.
Although researchers now have a better understanding of where Golconda diamonds may have come from, the exact origin remains uncertain due to the lack of liquid inclusions that typically provide clues about a diamond’s origin. This mystery adds to the allure of Golconda diamonds and ensures that they will continue to captivate both experts and diamond enthusiasts alike.
