In a tragic turn of events, a 12-year-old boy was killed and two others seriously injured in a shooting at a primary school in Finland on Tuesday. The perpetrator, also a 12-year-old schoolboy, has been arrested and admitted responsibility for the attack. The incident took place at the Viertola school in Vantaa, with about 800 students and 90 staff members.
The reasons behind the attack are unclear as authorities are still investigating the motive behind this unfortunate event. The Minister of Education, Anna-Maja Henriksson, expressed her deep sadness over the incident while emphasizing the loss of a young life and the serious injuries to those affected. Meanwhile, Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen offered condolences to the families of those affected and confirmed that the alleged perpetrator had been captured.
This school shooting has brought attention once again to Finland’s gun policy. The country has experienced similar incidents in the past prompting changes to firearm legislation. In 2007 and 2008, two separate shootings resulted in multiple casualties leading to Finland introducing a proficiency test for firearms license applicants and raising the age limit for obtaining a license. With over 1.5 million licensed firearms in the country, measures have been taken to prevent such tragedies from occurring again. Prime Minister Petteri Orpo offered his shock at this event while expressing his condolences to those affected by this tragedy as well as their families and school community.
