Unprecedented Poisoning Outbreak Linked to Specific Store in Vietnam: Update on May 6th

2 min read

On May 6, Long Khanh City People’s Committee reported that 560 people were hospitalized due to poisoning after consuming bread from a specific store in Xuan Binh ward on April 30. While others with milder symptoms received check-ups and returned home, more than 200 patients have been discharged from the hospital and 119 cases are being monitored at home. The number of hospitalizations has shown signs of decreasing after a continuous increase in recent days, with only a few cases with mild symptoms going to the hospital for monitoring.

The most severe case involves a 6-year-old boy in a coma at Children’s Hospital 1 in Ho Chi Minh City, while the second case is a 7-year-old child at Dong Nai Children’s Hospital showing signs of improvement. The investigation into the poisoning has been transferred to the police, and if no criminal liability is found, the city will handle administrative violations accordingly.

The shop owner reported selling 1,100 loaves of bread that day, leading to numerous cases of poisoning. The shop has stopped operating, and samples of food from the bakery have been collected for testing. The symptoms of E.coli poisoning include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, and the investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the contamination.
