The United States scored a major upset in the Twenty20 World Cup by defeating Pakistan in a Super Over in Dallas on Thursday. Despite being the 2009 champions, Pakistan was unable to defend their score of 159-7 as the U.S. managed to match their total and force the Super Over.
In the final over of their innings, the U.S. plundered 14 runs to finish on 159-3, setting up the dramatic finish. The tournament co-hosts made 18-1 in the Super Over with the help of two wides from Pakistan before restricting Pakistan to 13-1, securing their victory.
U.S captain Monank Patel, who was named player of the match, expressed his pride in his team’s performance: “It’s a big achievement beating Pakistan and playing for the first time. The way we played today I’m really proud of the boys and it was a complete team effort from ball one to the last ball.”
Pakistan captain Babar Azam lamented his team’s batting display, acknowledging missed opportunities: “We didn’t capitalise with the bat and they took a lot of momentum. We lost back-to-back wickets in the middle overs. As a batting unit you need to step up, you need to create partnerships and we didn’t do that.” Babar credited
