Uncovering the Truth: Free HIV Tests Encourage Unaware Individuals to Get Tested

On June 27th, the La Salle County Health Department is offering free rapid HIV finger stick tests to encourage individuals to get tested for HIV. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that people between the ages of 13 and 64 should get tested at least once as part of routine health care, and those at higher risk should consider more frequent testing.

Although significant progress has been made in treating HIV and related infections in the U.S., these advancements may be of little value to those who are unaware of their HIV status. It has been reported by the CDC that almost 40% of individuals with HIV are not diagnosed until they have already developed AIDS, which can take up to 10 years after initial infection. In the United States, there are close to 1.2 million people living with HIV, and approximately 13% of them are unaware of their status and require testing.

If you have engaged in risky behaviors such as unprotected sex with someone who uses injectable drugs, sharing needles, or being a man who has had sex with another man, it’s crucial to consider getting an HIV test. There are now more prevention tools available than ever before to reduce the risk of HIV transmission, including limiting sexual partners, never sharing needles, and consistently using condoms correctly.

For more information on HIV and testing, individuals can contact the La Salle County Health Department at 815-433-3366 or visit their website at www.lasallecountyil.gov. You can also stay updated by following the agency on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.
