UN, International Leaders Urge Immediate End to Gaza Conflict as Crisis Deepens

2 min read

The foreign ministers of Egypt and Jordan have called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, demanding the release of hostages taken by Palestinian fighters. French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné has also announced that France plans to present a political solution to the war in the UN Security Council. However, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Jordan Ayman Safadi believes that international law no longer has any effect on Israel on the ground. He stressed that the real disaster is the failure of the international community to prevent humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Safadi also claimed that Israeli government is using starvation as a weapon against Palestinians, and reiterated his country’s support for UNRWA, which has been facing crisis since Israel accused some of its employees of being involved in an attack by extremist organization Hamas last October. Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry echoed this sentiment, stating that Gaza cannot tolerate any more destruction and humanitarian suffering. He urged Israel to open its border crossings to transport humanitarian aid into Gaza Strip.

The United Nations Security Council passed a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza on Monday, while the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered on Thursday that Israel must ensure access to urgent humanitarian aid in Gaza Strip. Despite these efforts, civilians are still on the brink of starvation due to Israeli restrictions on imports and exports into the area.
