A video posted by the Ukrainian Azov Brigade showed an abandoned T-72B3M tank near the village of Terny in Donetsk province, with jamming devices connected together on its roof. Russian soldiers had combined various jamming devices at different frequency bands to create an electronic warfare system in the shape of a “Frankenstein monster” which was installed on the roof of a tank.
The electronic warfare system on the tank consisted of plate antennas with jamming capabilities at different frequencies tied together with ropes. While the system required power to operate, not all Russian tanks have auxiliary power, so the T-72B3M team installed generators and batteries to power the complex. The system effectively intercepted several FPV drones used by the enemy during an ambush by Ukrainian forces.
Despite facing difficulties with the opponent’s electronic warfare system, Ukrainian forces managed to disable the tank and recover it after removing wires and mines. This deployment of unique weapons and military equipment in the Ukrainian battlefield is not uncommon, with previous instances of innovative adaptations by both sides. The Ukrainian FrankenSAM project and Russia’s use of civilian trucks for military purposes are examples of such adaptations in the conflict.
