In an urgent warning, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has cautioned that his country could lose the war if the United States does not approve a new military aid package for Kyiv. The current political impasse in Congress is preventing the approval of the aid package due to disagreements between Democrats and Republicans. Zelensky emphasized that without US support, Ukraine would struggle not only to win the war but also to survive as a state. He also expressed concerns that if Ukraine falls, Russia may target other European states.
Zelensky had previously mentioned on April 6 that Ukraine was unable to launch a counteroffensive at the front due to a lack of ammunition. Specifically, he requested 25 additional Patriot air defense systems to help combat Russian air strikes. A bill allocating military aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan totaling over $95 billion has been under consideration by the US Congress since the fall of 2023. Ukraine is expected to receive a significant portion of this amount. However, the bill has been blocked by Republicans who are insisting on including provisions related to the southern US border.
Zelensky’s warning comes amid rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine, with Moscow continuing its military buildup near its borders with NATO countries. The situation remains volatile, with both sides accusing each other of provocations and violations of ceasefire agreements. The international community is closely watching the developments in Eastern Europe and urging all parties involved to exercise restraint and de-escalate tensions.
