Turkish physicist Professor Fatih Ömer İlday from Bilkent University in Ankara has been recognized with the prestigious Alexander von Humboldt Professorship award in Germany. This award aims to attract top international researchers to Germany, and İlday is celebrated for his work in fast laser technology.
His research focuses on developing ultra-fast lasers that have applications in various fields, including medicine. The 5 million euro award will fund his research unit at Ruhr-Universität Bochum for the next five years, where he will continue his work on “laser matter interactions.” He received the award from German Federal Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger, along with eight other scientists.
After completing his Ph.D in physics at Cornell University in 2003, İlday worked as a research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology before becoming a professor at Bilkent University in 2006. He has held a joint professorship in physics and electrical and electronics engineering since 2014, leading the Ultrafast Optics and Lasers Laboratory (UFOLAB).
İlday is also a distinguished member of prestigious scientific societies such as Academia Europaea, the Turkish Academy of Sciences, and both the Turkish and American Physical Societies.
