On Thursday, Jonas Vingegaard, a two-time Tour de France winner, suffered a serious injury during a race crash on the fourth stage of the Tour of the Basque Country in Spain. The Danish cyclist broke his collarbone and several ribs in the crash, which occurred during a descent on the Olaeta climb, about 35 kilometres from the finish line.
Vingegaard’s team, Visma | Lease a Bike, described the crash as caused by several riders sliding straight on at a right-hand bend in the front of the peloton. Primož Roglič of Slovenia, who won gold at the Tokyo Olympic time trial championships, and Remco Evenepoel of Belgium, who is both the world road race and time trial champion, were also involved in the crash.
Roglič had to withdraw from the tour due to his injuries but gave a thumbs up to a broadcast camera as he rode away in a car. Evenepoel headed to hospital for further examinations after being forced to withdraw due to his injuries. Despite this incident, Roglič managed to give an impressive display of sportsmanship by giving a thumbs up while riding away in a car.
