Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur Apologizes to Captain Son Heung-min for Racial Slur on Uruguayan Television

1 min read

Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has apologized to captain Son Heung-min for making a racial slur on Uruguayan television. Bentancur described his comments as a “very bad joke” that was not meant to disrespect or hurt anyone.

During an appearance on Canal 10 show Por La Camiseta, Bentancur was asked for a Spurs player’s shirt by host Rafa Cotelo. The Uruguay international made a comment insinuating that all members of Son’s family look the same. The clip of his remarks quickly circulated on social media, leading to backlash.

In response to the controversy, Bentancur took to Instagram to publicly apologize to Son. He referred to him as “Sonny brother” and expressed his deep regret for the hurtful joke. He reassured Son that he respects and values their relationship, emphasizing his love and admiration for his team-mate.

As of now, Son has not publicly responded to Bentancur’s apology. The two players have been colleagues since Bentancur joined Tottenham from Juventus earlier this year. Meanwhile, Bentancur is focused on his upcoming participation in the Copa America tournament in the United States, scheduled to begin on 20 June.
