As the Warriors enter the NBA offseason, they have a lot on their plate. The upcoming free agency of Klay Thompson is their top concern, but they also need to consider signing 2020 NBA Draft class members Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody to rookie-scale contract extensions before the Oct. 23 deadline. Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy has expressed his desire to keep the duo in Golden State long term, although timings are a factor.
Dunleavy spoke to The Athletic’s Tim Kawakami about the team’s plans for extending Kuminga and Moody. While other pressing matters are currently on their minds, he mentioned that they eventually plan to address this matter. Securing the young players’ futures on the team remains a priority for the Warriors.
With reports indicating that Thompson may be leaving, Golden State needs to find a way to fill the void he will leave. This has led to discussions about potential trades involving Kuminga or Moody. Dunleavy has not ruled out this possibility, but no trade scenario can be entirely ruled out at this stage.
Kuminga had a strong season in 2023-24 and proved himself as an essential player in coach Steve Kerr’s lineup. Moody also showed promise and could potentially take on a more significant role. With George having chosen free agency and leaving fewer options for impactful players to pursue in a trade, it is clear that finding replacements will be challenging.
Despite these challenges, Dunleavy wants to have a clear understanding of the team’s cap situation before making any decisions about contract extensions or trades involving their young core. While certain players may be off-limits, no trade scenario can be entirely ruled out.
