On Friday, a man armed with a knife injured three people in a market in Mannheim, Germany. The attack occurred around 11:35 Spanish time in Mannheim’s Market Square during an anti-Islam rally by activist Michael Johannes Stürzenberger.
The assailant, who remains unidentified, stabbed Stürzenberger in the leg and face and also attacked a police officer at least twice, including once in the neck. Both Stürzenberger and the officer are undergoing emergency surgery, with the latter’s condition reported as more serious.
Stürzenberger is known for his activism against Islam which has led to legal convictions. The attacker was shot several times by police and is in serious condition. Police have assured that there is no longer any danger to the public, but transportation around the square remains blocked.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned the incident, calling the images from Mannheim “terrible” and stating that violence is unacceptable in a democracy. The perpetrator faces severe punishment. The incident has prompted political reactions and heightened security measures in the area.
The attack has raised concerns about safety and the rise of extremist sentiments in Germany. Investigations are ongoing to determine the motives behind the attack and to ensure public safety in Mannheim and beyond.
