The Balloon Brigade: How the University of Virginia is Bringing Joy and Sustainability Together

2 min read

During Final Exercises at the University of Virginia, a scene from the movie “Up” played out as student volunteers carried bright bundles of mylar sunflowers, octopuses, jellyfish, and flamingos. Onlookers may have been concerned that the volunteers would float away with the balloons they were collecting. But this tradition of carrying balloons during Finals Weekend has become a way for families to spot their students among the crowds.

Five years ago, the University of Virginia established the “Balloon Brigade” to protect the environment and spread cheer. The Brigade collects hundreds of balloons from graduates to give them a second life and bring joy to the UVA community and surrounding region. Lela Garner, the student outreach and engagement manager for UVA Sustainability, emphasized the importance of repurposing the balloons to bring joy to the community, including children’s hospitals and other organizations.

The Balloon Brigade’s efforts not only help protect the environment by reducing balloon litter but also bring smiles to those who receive the colorful balloons. By taking balloons to community organizations and spreading cheer, the Brigade is making a positive impact on both the UVA community and the surrounding region. This initiative serves as a great example of how small actions can make a big difference in supporting sustainability and spreading happiness.
