As the Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris has been a staunch supporter of President Joe Biden. Her support for him was especially evident in his recent debate performance. Harris has also emerged as a potential candidate to lead the party if Biden decides not to continue his campaign.
The $91 million in cash available to the current campaign and the $240 million in cash accessible to the reelection effort, including allied Democratic organizations, raises an important question about what would happen if Biden were to drop out of the race.
If this were to happen, Harris could potentially take over the campaign funds, but with some limitations. Donors may only receive refunds if approved by the campaign team, as once they make a donation, they relinquish any rights to those funds.
If neither Biden nor Harris become the party’s nominee, the campaign team would have to return all the money. Donations intended for primaries won by Biden would remain with the campaign, and if it were to become a political action committee (PAC), there would be limits on transferring funds to a new candidate.
However, these are not the only options for using these funds. They could also be transferred to Democratic committees that support House and Senate candidates or used for charitable donations or causes that align with their views. It is up to various factors such as their candidacy status and decisions made by donors and campaign teams that will determine how these funds will ultimately be utilized.
