Green Cargo has recently introduced a new intermodal service between Göteborg and the port of Norrköping. The service, which runs on weekdays, will carry trailers, swap bodies, and containers. Its goal is to offer a cost-effective, fast, and sustainable alternative to the large volume of goods currently being transported by road in this corridor. To achieve this, Green Cargo has partnered with DB Cargo FLS Nordic. Matilda Hedström, Green Cargo’s Key Account Manager, highlighted the benefits of this new service.
Meanwhile in North America, Union Pacific has launched a second premium intermodal train between Southern California and the Chicago area. The daily service started on April 28 and operates at speeds of up to 110 km/h. It connects the City of Industry & Inland Empire Intermodal Terminal in California with the Global 2 terminal at Northlake, Illinois. Interchange connections are provided to and from the Ohio Valley and northeastern cities.
In Europe, proposed increases to track access charges in Sweden, Germany, and Portugal have raised concerns among the European Rail Freight Association (ERFA). The significant increases – 40% in Sweden, 16% in Germany, and 8% in Portugal – have the potential to compromise the EU’s modal shift objectives. ERFA is calling for short-term support measures to offset the impact of these increases, especially since many transport contracts for 2025 were agreed upon before operators were informed of the hikes.
