As summer approaches, San Diego County public health officials are urging the public to get vaccinated before attending large events due to an increase in local cases of Mpox. In May and June, the county reported seven cases, which matched the number reported in Los Angeles. This is a significant increase from the typical one or two cases recorded per month in 2024.
Out of the recent cases, four were among individuals who had not received the vaccine. Dr. Ankita Kadakia, County Interim Public Health Officer, emphasized the importance of receiving both doses of the JYNNEOS vaccine to protect against Mpox. With upcoming summer events that could contribute to the spread of the virus, itβs crucial for individuals to be fully protected.
San Diego County experienced an Mpox outbreak in 2022, primarily affecting individuals in the LGBTQ+ community. However, Mpox can impact anyone as it can be transmitted through close physical contact. Symptoms of infection include rashes or sores that can last two to four weeks with potential for intense pain, especially in sensitive areas. It is common for individuals with Mpox to experience flu-like symptoms before the appearance of rashes or sores.
The JYNNEOS vaccine is effective in protecting against Mpox and is available at county public health clinics. Individuals can also consult with their healthcare provider, visit myturn.ca.gov or call 211 for assistance in finding the vaccine. According to the U.S Centers for Disease Control, individuals who have received just one dose of JYNNEOS should get a second dose 28 days later for maximum protection if more than 28 days have passed since receiving their first dose
