Student-Led Mock Hearing Provides Unique Insight into Legislative Process for Capital Region High School Students

1 min read

High school students from the Capital Region had a unique opportunity to participate in the state legislative process on Monday through Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara’s annual student cabinet meeting. This hands-on lawmaking experience allowed students to engage in a mock legislative hearing addressing “The Use of AI in Schools” at the New York State Capitol.

Facilitated by students themselves, the mock hearing provided a platform for interaction with key stakeholders such as the assistant superintendent of the Northeastern Regional Information Center and the president of the Schenectady Federation of Teachers. The event gave students a chance to voice their opinions and advocate for issues affecting their future.

The student cabinet program offers a valuable experience for students to learn about the legislative process and actively engage in discussions about important topics. By participating in these meetings, students develop valuable skills in critical thinking, public speaking, and civic engagement. Overall, the event was a valuable opportunity for Capital Region high school students to learn and contribute to the democratic process.
