The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office recently received a technology grant from the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services. This $665,000 grant will enhance the department’s ability to investigate crimes and provide valuable traffic data, allowing them to improve public safety in the community.
The funds will be used to purchase various items that will improve daily duties. Among these items are three mobile and fixed license plate readers, a new drone, a 3D laser scanner, and dash cameras for every patrol car. The license plate readers will help provide traffic data in specific areas, which can be shared with local law enforcement partners and crime analysis centers.
The drone will be used to capture footage of suspicious fires, crash scenes, SWAT deployments, natural disasters, and assist with missing person investigations. The 3D laser scanner will help document large items, crime scenes, and car crashes.
A significant portion of the grant will be used to fund dash cameras for patrol cars. Each dashcam will come with five years of maintenance and data storage to ensure that digital evidence is easily accessible and shareable with partners and crime analysis centers.
The grant award will be presented to the Steuben County Legislature in June for acceptance. This technology grant will greatly enhance the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office’s ability to investigate crimes and provide valuable traffic data to improve public safety in the community.
