STEM Champions: Students Showcase Disaster-Resistant Structures in New York City’s Police Athletic League Science Fair

Recently, young students from across New York City had the chance to participate in the Police Athletic League’s annual science fair, showcasing their knowledge in STEM subjects. The event, held at the PAL center in Longwood, featured students in grades five through eight presenting their projects focused on natural disasters.

The students were tasked with creating structures capable of withstanding disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, wildfires, and more for a minimum of 20 seconds. The projects displayed a range of innovative ideas, with some students designing bridges, highways, and armories to demonstrate their engineering skills.

Despite coming from different neighborhoods and backgrounds, participants from all five boroughs brought their creativity and passion for STEM to the fair, highlighting their dedication to learning and exploring scientific concepts. The first-place winner of the competition was awarded $500 to put towards a STEM project at their PAL center, providing them with the opportunity to further their education and pursue their interests in science and technology.
