Matthew Winstead, a rising sophomore at South Central High School, may have just had one of the standout performances of the spring season at the Big Carolina Conference meet. In the Pepsi Sports Spotlight, Winstead shared his passion for running and how it allows him to feel free and open-minded while fueling his competitive spirit.
Winstead’s love for running began in elementary school when he joined a running club and discovered a newfound passion for the sport. Despite a setback during his freshman year due to a foot injury, Winstead persevered and had an impressive sophomore season. He won three events at the conference championships, including the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m, earning 30 points for his team. His accomplishments earned him the title of Big Carolina Conference Track and Field Player of the Year as a sophomore.
With two more years of high school ahead of him, Winstead has his sights set on running in college and breaking South Central’s records. His favorite event is the 800m, and his coach, Robert Wolbert, believes that Winstead’s work ethic and determination will take him far in his running career.
