2 min read

The Slovak Prime Minister, Robert Fico, has been stabilized following an attack on Wednesday but his health remains serious. A recent medical report issued on Saturday stated that Fico underwent surgery to remove necrotic tissue from his abdomen due to shots fired by his attacker, Juraj Cintula. Despite the operation, Fico is not yet out of danger and will remain in a medical center in Banská Bystrica for several days.

The Slovak Minister of Health, Zuzana Dolinková, confirmed that Fico is now conscious according to Deputy Prime Minister Robert Kalinak. Although Fico’s condition is improving, there is still a possibility of complications with gunshot wounds and he remains in critical condition. Originally planned to be transferred to a hospital in Bratislava on Monday, Fico will now stay at the medical center in Banská Bystrica.

Kalinak stated that the medical team treating Fico does not foresee any further surgical operations at this time and that Fico has given his consent to serve as acting head of the Executive in line with his Government program while recovering. However, Kalinak also cautioned about potential complications with gunshot wounds and urged people to continue praying for Fico’s recovery.

Meanwhile, Juraj Cintula, the 71-year-old man who shot the prime minister, is currently being held in preventive detention at a police station in Košice. The Specialized Criminal Court ordered his detention on suspicion that he may pose a flight risk and possibly continue committing criminal acts. Despite admitting to shooting Fico, Cintula claimed he did not intend to kill him and faces charges of attempted premeditated murder for reasons of revenge with a potential sentence ranging from 25 years to life in prison.
