Kieran McKenna, the current manager of Ipswich Town, has recently won the League Managers Association’s manager of the year award, beating out top managers such as Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola and Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta. Despite his success, McKenna is no longer in the running to become Chelsea’s next manager following Mauricio Pochettino’s departure from the club.
The leading candidates to replace Pochettino at Chelsea are former Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi, Leicester’s Enzo Maresca, and Brentford’s Thomas Frank. While McKenna was initially considered for the role, it seems that he is now focused on staying with Ipswich and leading the team to further success.
Ipswich is keen to retain McKenna’s services and are expected to offer him a new contract, although it is unlikely that he will renew his current deal. McKenna is under contract with Ipswich until 2027, and any club looking to hire him would need to pay a compensation fee of at least £4m.
De Zerbi and Maresca have expressed interest in moving to Stamford Bridge, while talks with Frank are less clear. Chelsea is hoping to appoint a new manager within the next week, but negotiations around compensation with the manager’s current club will play a significant role in the decision-making process.
