Shining a Light on Tokyo: A Giant Godzilla Showcases Japanese Culture and Art through Projection Mapping

Tokyo Night & Light projection mapping show in Metropolitan Tokyo has become a popular sightseeing attraction that illuminates the city’s night sky. This unique show, which is recognized by Guinness World Records™ as the “Largest architectural projection-mapped display (permanent)”, has attracted over 200,000 visitors since its debut in February 2024.

During weekends and holidays, the show features “Godzilla: Attack on Tokyo” in celebration of Godzilla’s 70th birthday. The 100-meter tall Godzilla from the “VS Series” films is projected onto the Metropolitan Government Building at life-size scale, engaging in a thrilling battle with the new anti-Godzilla weapon “Super X2 modified”.

In addition to this iconic show, the TOKYO Night & Light also features “Ukiyo”, a Japanese-style content inspired by Ukiyo-e paintings from the Edo period. These paintings depict daily life with vivid colors and the concept of “ukiyo” representing a world in constant change. Using AI learning and CG visuals, the creators have merged the world of Ukiyo-e paintings with contemporary pop culture to showcase Japanese culture on a grand scale.

This unique projection mapping show offers a glimpse into Japanese art and culture on a global scale. Visitors can witness these stunning displays during specific times listed on https://tokyoprojectionmappingproject.jp/en/event/20240225/.
