Shaping the Future of Science Education in Nebraska: A Look at the Proposed Revisions to Science Standards

Nebraska Department of Education recently releases initial draft of proposed revisions to science standards

The State Board of Education established the framework for science education in Nebraska following the approval of the current science standards in 2017. These standards, which cover the science requirements outlined in law, were developed by Nebraska educators from various levels, including pre-kindergarten to postsecondary, as well as both public and non-public schools. The approval process for these standards is expected to be completed by fall 2024.

Content area standards in Nebraska outline knowledge and skills that students should acquire in specific subject areas. These clear learning benchmarks provide guidance to teachers as they design educational experiences that align with student learning needs. It’s important to note that these standards do not dictate specific curriculum, teaching methods, or activities; those decisions are made locally by school districts and individual teachers.

The public is encouraged to review the proposed draft of the science standards and provide feedback through a public input survey or email (nde.sciencestandardsinput@nebraska.gov). The survey will remain open until May 30, 2024.
