In response to the controversial statements made by Argentine president Javier Milei, Pedro Sánchez, the President of the Government, has called on companies to push back against populism. This appeal comes as Antonio Garamendi, the president of the employers’ association, firmly rejected Milei’s remarks labeling Begoña Gómez, Sánchez’s wife, as corrupt.
Sánchez emphasized the importance of defending Spanish institutions from insults and defamations by foreign leaders while underscoring the risks posed by far-right international movements. He urged societies to uphold democracy based on economic progress, social justice, and coexistence.
Furthermore, Sánchez warned against threats to the European and Spanish social model that has led to a period of unprecedented prosperity. He praised German business consortiums for mobilizing against the rise of extreme right and racist rhetoric and emphasized the importance of defending well-being model that Europe represents.
Sánchez also highlighted Spain’s positive economic growth under his administration. He pointed out significant increase in permanent employment, higher minimum wages and improved family income all contributing to Spain’s progress and unity. Additionally he emphasized impact of European funds on various sectors such as training, digitalization and energy transition with stress on reshaping Spanish economy especially in historically overlooked regions like Extremadura and Andalusia.
Overall Sánchez’ address at CREO economic forum focused on defending democratic values promoting economic growth and fostering social equality in Spain calling on business community to actively support these efforts stand against populist threats to democracy.
