Russia and Vietnam are working together on the development of the Nuclear Science and Technology Research Center Project, which includes a new 10 MW research reactor. The goal of this project is to produce radioactive pharmaceuticals for cancer treatment and diagnosis, as well as irradiate silicon to create semiconductor materials for chip production. This was announced by Dr. Tran Chi Thanh, Director of the Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute, during a press conference organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology.

In late June, the General Director of Rosatom and the Minister of Science and Technology of Vietnam signed a memorandum of understanding on the implementation plan for the project. They agreed on cooperation and implementation methods to effectively build and operate the center in Long Khanh City, Dong Nai. The center will feature a tank-type nuclear reactor with a capacity of 10 MW.

The new research reactor will significantly increase production capacity compared to current capabilities, allowing Vietnam to become more self-sufficient in nuclear energy resources. The Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute is preparing specialized groups in various areas related to the research reactor to ensure its safe and efficient operation.

This project aligns with Vietnam’s policy to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and support socio-economic development. Several countries around the world are focusing on nuclear energy resources to achieve their development goals. This project represents Vietnam’s first large-capacity nuclear research reactor and is an important step in its nuclear energy development.

To support this project, the Ministry of Science and Technology has requested assistance from Rosatom in training staff to operate the research reactor. This collaboration aims to enhance Vietnam’s capabilities in nuclear science and technology research and applications, while also promoting global cooperation between countries working towards similar goals.
