Maatsen, a talented Dutch left-back, has been the subject of interest from multiple clubs, including Aston Villa and Chelsea. The two clubs have reached an agreement on a transfer fee for Maatsen, with the fee estimated to be between £35m and £40m. However, personal terms still need to be finalized and a medical examination is pending before the transfer can be completed.
Maatsen has had an impressive career so far, starting his journey with Chelsea at the young age of 16. He made his senior debut in a League Cup match against Grimsby Town in 2019 and has since gone on to have loan spells at Charlton Athletic and Coventry City. In 2020, he excelled at Burnley, scoring four goals in 39 league appearances and being included in the EFL’s Championship team of the season.
During a tour of the United States, Maatsen caught the eye of former Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino. Despite being offered a permanent move to Burnley, Maatsen opted to stay with Chelsea and struggled for game time in the first half of the season. In January 2021, he was loaned out to Borussia Dortmund where he played a key role in their run to the Champions League final.
Despite not having earned a senior cap, Maatsen was included in the Netherlands squad for Euro 2024 as cover for injuries. He played a pivotal role in Dortmund’s Champions League campaign, scoring in the quarter-final victory over Atletico Madrid and being named in Uefa’s team of the season. With his impressive track record and potential on display, it is no surprise that Aston Villa and Chelsea are interested in signing him.
