Rising Star Apostolos Christou Secures European Championship in Men’s 100 Backstroke, Sets Personal and World Season Record

2 min read

The 2024 European Championships recently concluded with the Men’s 100 Backstroke Final taking place. Thomas Ceccon from Italy held the World Record and European Record of 51.60, set in 2022, while Camille LaCourt of France had set the Championship Record at 52.11 in 2010.

In the final, Apostolos Christou of Greece took home the European Title with a time of 52.23, ranking as the third fastest time in the world so far this season. Christou’s personal best of 52.09 was achieved during the semifinals at the 2022 World Championships, where he finished 5th with a time of 52.57. He also previously swam a 52.24 at the 2023 European Championships and won a bronze medal this past February with a time of 53.36 despite missing the semifinals at the same event in China and Japan last year due to COVID-19 restrictions.

In terms of split comparison, during the Euros, Christou clocked an impressive first half-length split of just over two minutes and then an impressive second half-length split of around one minute and thirty seconds, which is better than his previous season best of a minute and forty seconds at Greek Nationals last year that ranked him #19 in the world at that time but put him behind Xu Jiayu of China and Ryan Murphy of US who are currently leading in season rankings for their respective countries.
