In the heart of West Philadelphia lies a revolutionary summer camp designed to enrich the lives of children through various opportunities. Unlike traditional summer camps that focus on swimming, crafts, and sports, this camp is a digital recreation center that delivers valuable resources directly to kids in the neighborhood.
The Why Project, a nonprofit organization located off 52nd Street, is hands-on and focuses on science, math, and technology to expose sixth through twelfth graders to new ideas and possibilities. Teens like Khalid Porter-Serious are currently participating in the program and learning about the media industry and music production. Thanks to a grant, Khalid is also being paid to teach younger kids. He mentioned that his participation goes beyond the financial aspect as it will benefit him in college applications, future job opportunities and create lasting bonds with the people he works with.
The Why Project was founded by 25-year-old Justin Hill, a recent graduate of Columbia University who is starting law school at Temple University in the fall. Hill’s vision for the digital camp is to bridge the gap between education and the professional world while also emphasizing culture and helping young people believe in their own potential. This innovative approach to summer camp is inspiring and empowering kids in West Philadelphia to reach their full potential and pursue their passions.
