The upcoming Euro 2024 tournament, scheduled to take place in Germany in June, is eagerly anticipated by football fans around the world. In addition to the excitement of the fans, the world of technology is also eagerly awaiting the event. A recent analysis by Zeileis research group using artificial intelligence (AI) predicts that France is the favorite to win the trophy with a probability of 19.2%.
The prediction was based on four complex statistical models that took into account various factors such as historical performance of each team over the past eight years, expectations and probabilities from 28 betting houses, individual and collective qualifications of players, and additional variables like GDP of each country. The models were trained with data from matches played between Euro 2021 and present, analyzing goals scored by each team and using Poisson method to simulate all group stage matches 100,000 times.
According to the simulation results, England came in second place with a 16.7% chance of winning followed by Germany with 13.7% and Spain with a 12% likelihood of winning securing them fourth spot in predictions. An interactive graph was used to display expected performance of each team throughout tournament showing how their probabilities varied in each phase. While AI can offer valuable insights and predictions but unpredictability and magic of football have potential to defy even most accurate models. Surprises and excitement that come with each match keep nerves on edge as history has shown anything can happen on football pitch.
The Euro 2024 tournament promises to be an exciting event for football fans around the world, with many teams vying for glory. While technology may offer valuable insights and predictions, it’s important to remember that nothing can replace the thrill and unpredictability of live sports action on television or at stadiums worldwide.
