Remembering the Unseen: A New Documentary Celebrates the Heroes of Color Who Fought in World War II

For too long, the stories of black and brown soldiers in history have been ignored or erased. Their heroic moments have been overshadowed by those of other soldiers, while their own legacies remain untold. This erasure was almost deliberate, with a focus shifted away from these individuals.

Now, a new documentary is set to shed light on the experiences of black and brown soldiers during World War II. Idris Elba, who is working on the project, wishes he had his grandfather’s memoirs to better understand his own family’s history during the war. Stephen Woodson, whose father served in the 320th Barrage Balloon Battalion, has found the documentary helpful in understanding the hardships his father faced.

The documentary will be released on Monday, just before the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Its goal is to highlight the stories of black and brown soldiers who have been overlooked and to honor their contributions during World War II. These soldiers deserve to be recognized and celebrated for their bravery and service to their country.

As Idris Elba puts it, “These soldiers should not be forgotten.” The documentary aims to bring their stories to life and ensure that future generations remember the sacrifices made by black and brown soldiers throughout history.
