Carson Spiers, a former Clemson Tigers pitcher, is among the few who can claim that they have struck out Major League Baseball star Shohei Ohtani. Recently, Spiers delivered a remarkable relief performance for the Cincinnati Reds in their win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. During the game, Spiers pitched 3 1/3 innings and struck out three batters, including Ohtani and Mookie Betts.
Spiers’ impressive performance helped secure a victory for the Reds and complete a three-game sweep of the Dodgers. This was his fourth relief appearance of the season, during which he has maintained a 3.29 ERA with eight strikeouts and three walks. The 26-year-old right-hander made his Major League debut with the Reds in 2020, pitching in four games.
Originally from South Carolina, Spiers attended Greenville High School before joining Clemson University in 2017. During his time with the Tigers, he posted a 2.47 ERA and earned 19 saves in 109 1/3 innings. The Reds signed Spiers as a non-drafted free agent in 2020, and he has steadily been making a name for himself in professional baseball world.
In recent years, many professional baseball players have shown great interest in Ohtani’s abilities on both sides of the plate. While most major league pitchers are not known for hitting well, Ohtani has shown some impressive skills at bat as well.
In addition to striking out Ohtani during his relief appearance for the Reds, Spiers also faced him once while playing for Clemson against UCLA during their NCAA regional tournament run in June of 2018.
Despite being relatively new to professional baseball world compared to some other players on this list, Spiers has already proven himself to be an effective reliever with impressive skills both on and off the mound.
