Record-breaking Gretchen Walsh Faces Tough Competition in Quest for Olympic Spot

Gretchen Walsh is a swimmer from the University of Virginia who made waves at the U.S. Olympic trials by breaking the world record in the women’s 100-meter butterfly semifinals. Her time of 55.18 beat the previous record set by Sarah Sjöström in 2016, marking the first world record set at U.S. trials since Michael Phelps in 2008. However, Walsh is not alone in her quest for an Olympic spot as she faces tough competition from Torri Huske and Regan Smith for the two available spots on the team.

Huske, a former American record holder, nearly matched Walsh’s pace during her first semifinal heat, putting up a strong performance that will be hard to beat. Smith, who won a medal at the 2021 Olympics, also put up a strong showing and will be a formidable opponent.

The final race will determine which two swimmers will represent the United States in the women’s 100 butterfly event at the Olympics.
