In December 2022, Cristiano Ronaldo signed a deal with Al Nassr that will keep him with the team until May 2024. This news came as no surprise, as Ronaldo has been one of the highest-paid athletes in the world for years. In fact, he recently topped the Forbes list of highest-paid athletes for the fourth time in his career, with golfer Jon Rahm moving up to second place and pushing Lionel Messi down to third.
Rahm’s earnings jumped significantly after he joined the Saudi-funded LIV Golf tour, reportedly earning $218m (£172m). Other footballers Neymar and Karim Benzema also made it into the top 10 after their moves to the Saudi Pro League. Basketball stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo, LeBron James, and Stephen Curry are also on the list.
According to Forbes, the world’s top 10 highest-paid athletes collectively earned a record-high $1.38 bn (£1.06bn) before taxes and agents’ fees in the past 12 months. The list includes top earners like Cristiano Ronaldo, Jon Rahm, Lionel Messi, LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kylian Mbappe
