Qatar University and NASA Partner to Advance Quantum Research and Education in the Middle East

Hamad Bin Khalifa University’s College of Science and Engineering (CSE) has recently established a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NASA, marking a significant milestone in the field of quantum research and education. Led by the Qatar Center for Quantum Computing (QC2) at CSE, the agreement aims to explore collaborative opportunities in quantum communications, sensing, and space-based applications.

One key aspect of the partnership is a feasibility study to develop technologies for quantum communications and networking, as well as quantum sensors for space science and observation. This includes modeling and testing systems for applications such as blind quantum computing, distributed quantum computing, and Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI). Additionally, the collaboration will consider potential future space-based quantum missions for technology demonstration and testing.

HBKU and NASA will also work together on training, education, and workforce development in quantum technologies. The initiative will involve creating specialized educational programs to build local capacity and attract talent from the region.

Dr. Saif Al-Kuwari, Director of QC2, highlighted the broad scope of the collaboration and its potential to drive innovation in quantum technologies, aligning with QC2’s objectives. The partnership between HBKU’s CSE and NASA represents a significant step forward in advancing our understanding of this rapidly evolving field.
