Nantucket’s community is at stake in the upcoming Town Meeting on May 7. The fate of our island’s economy rests in the balance, and we must come together to vote YES on Article 59.
I am deeply connected to Nantucket’s community, with multiple short-term rentals and an architectural firm on the island. From my personal experience, I have seen firsthand the critical role that short-term rentals play in preserving our community. For many, including myself, short-term renting is not just a financial necessity but a lifeline that allows us to maintain properties we otherwise couldn’t afford.
Tourism has been a saving grace for our island’s economy since the end of whaling, sustaining us for nearly two centuries. As someone invested in the well-being of our island, I cannot believe we would even consider allowing a few individuals to undermine it. It is important to recognize the vital relationship between tourism and local businesses. Short-term rental visitors not only support shops and restaurants but also contribute to the island’s workforce and bring people together as part of our community.
However, property owner rights are under threat from those who want to restrict them. We cannot let their interests jeopardize the livelihoods of many families or risk undermining the very core of our community. Article 59 is more than just protecting short-term rentals; it is about safeguarding the foundation of our island’s economy and ensuring financial stability for residents.
Tourism has been a saving grace for Nantucket’s economy since the end of whaling, sustaining us for nearly two centuries. It is crucial that we come together to support Article 59 at this Town Meeting on May 7 to ensure continued prosperity for Nantucket and future generations alike.
I urge each and every one of you to stand with me and vote YES on Article 59 at this Town Meeting on May 7.
