Pope Francis has decided not to lead the traditional Good Friday procession at Rome’s Colosseum due to health concerns, the Vatican announced. The last-minute decision raised questions about his condition during this busy period.
The 87-year-old pontiff had prepared meditations for the event, which re-enacts Christ’s Passion and crucifixion. However, just before the procession began, the Vatican stated that Francis was following the event from his home at the Vatican to preserve his health for upcoming events.
Pope Francis has been struggling with what has been described by him and the Vatican as bronchitis or a cold all winter. He has also been having others read his speeches occasionally and even skipped his Palm Sunday homily. Despite these health issues, Pope Francis is scheduled to preside over the Easter Vigil on Saturday and Easter Sunday Mass in St. Peter’s Square. He is also expected to deliver his “Urbi et Orbi” address on global crises and threats to humanity.
Francis’ absence from the Good Friday procession has raised concerns but he continues to fulfill his duties as head of the Catholic Church during this significant time in the liturgical calendar.
