During the top of the third inning of Friday night’s game between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Boston Red Sox, William Contreras hit a 111.8 mph two-run home run, giving the Brewers a commanding 3-0 lead. The ball soared into the Green Monster seats at Fenway Park, completely destroying a fan’s in-game treat in the process.
As the ball hurtled towards the stands, two Red Sox fans narrowly avoided being hit in the face. The ball ricocheted behind them, striking their popcorn container and sending kernels flying. Despite the mishap, Brewers analyst Tim Dillard stepped in to deliver the fans fresh popcorn later in the game, lifting their spirits.
After the game, AppleTV+’s Tricia Whitaker interviewed Contreras as he signed a popcorn bucket he had hit. The Red Sox couple then had a heartwarming moment with Contreras. In his interview with Whitaker, Contreras expressed his gratitude for meeting with them and thanked them for understanding that it was an unfortunate accident that could have caused harm to themselves or others.
Contreras continued to impress on offense during Friday night’s game by going 2-for-4. He ranks fifth in MLB with 42 RBIs and leads all catchers with a .337 batting average. The Brewers won this particular game 7-2 and added another memorable moment to Contreras’ stat line for this season.
In goodwill gesture, Contreras offered to pay for any damages caused by his home run ball including destroyed popcorn bucket jokingly suggesting he could cover it with tickets which brought laughter among everyone involved
