Polestar, a Swedish electric performance car brand, and Finnish smart surface pioneer TactoTek have joined forces in a collaboration to explore the integration of Injection Molded Structural Electronics (IMSE) technology into Polestar’s vehicle programs. Through this partnership, Polestar will be licensing TactoTek’s IMSE technology, products, and solutions in order to investigate innovative lighting and human-machine interface (HMI) use cases.
The collaboration between Polestar and TactoTek represents a commitment to sustainable innovation in the automotive industry. By incorporating IMSE technology into their design processes, Polestar aims to redefine the future of car design for the electric age. IMSE parts are manufactured using clean additive processes, reducing complexity and streamlining global supply chains by performing the functions of a conventional multi-part assembly in a single part.
IMSE technology enables the seamless integration of electronics into thin conformal plastic structures, allowing for advanced lighting features and Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) that are both sustainable and aesthetically appealing. Licensing TactoTek’s IMSE technology provides OEMs like Polestar with the opportunity to enhance their design differentiation, simplify structures, reduce weight, and minimize environmental impacts, such as the use of PCB assemblies.
TactoTek’s suite of technology transfer resources will enable Polestar designers to fully incorporate IMSE technology into their newest designs. The CEO of TactoTek, Mr. Jussi Harvela, emphasizes the significant sustainability benefits of IMSE technology, noting its potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 50%. The collaboration between Polestar and TactoTek signifies a shared vision of building sustainable solutions while delivering exceptional customer experiences.
