The PGA Championship was delayed on Friday morning when Scottie Scheffler, the top-ranked golfer in the world, was detained by police. The incident occurred after a misunderstanding with officials following a traffic incident that resulted in a pedestrian’s death.
According to ESPN, a police officer approached Scheffler’s car as he was driving to Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky. The officer asked Scheffler to exit his vehicle and then placed him in handcuffs. The event was delayed earlier in the day after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a bus outside the golf club.
The PGA Championship was pushed back again when Scheffler, who was scheduled to tee off at 8:48 a.m., was arrested. The event was rescheduled for 8:35 a.m. ET. Scheffler is the 29th highest-paid athlete in the world, earning $59.2 million from wins on the PGA Tour and endorsements with Nike, TaylorMade, and Veritex Bank. In 2023, he set the regular-season PGA Tour record for on-course earnings with $21 million.
